Owens Outstanding Vascular Sonography Graduate Uses Desire to Help for Motivation

Growing up as the hearing child of two deaf parents, Emily Burhart was familiar with helping others from a young age. So, when she was looking for a career path to take, the impact she could have on others was important.

The Sylvania native found it at Owens Community College. She will graduate in spring 2025 with an associate degree in Vascular Sonography while also being recognized as the program’s outstanding graduate.

Burhart grew up learning both English and American Sign Language. She and her brother would translate for her parents at various appointments and other opportunities.

“Growing up in that household was different. I was always there to help them because in the real world, everyone kind of ignored them,” Burhart said. “Not everyone knows sign language, so my purpose in life has been to help people, including my parents, with these big life-changing moments.”

After graduating from high school, she was in her third year of working toward a bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology when she realized that wasn’t the route she wanted to take. Burhart decided to finish that degree and then pursue what was next.

She wanted to stay in the healthcare field and had always been interested in sonography and ultrasound.

“I didn’t know what vascular sonography was. I don’t know that most people do until they get in the program,” Burhart said. “I found out I loved it. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

“Obviously, we can’t diagnose the patient, but we’re there with them if they have a blood clot or aneurysm. I think it’s cool to see that we’re able to help someone.”

For her second clinical this year, Burhart contacted the University of Michigan Hospital. While not normally a clinical site for Owens vascular sonography students, Burhart managed to convince U of M to open up as a site.

Now, Burhart knows what she wants. Her goal is to work in an inpatient hospital setting, where she can help comfort the patients she works with. She also loves the fast pace and ever-changing demands.

“I’m ready to graduate, I’m excited for this next chapter,” Burhart said.

“I loved Owens. It was a great two years. I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else.”
