The Dietetic Technician Program faculty includes highly-skilled Registered Dietitians, licensed in the state of Ohio; and master's prepared culinary and business instructors, all devoted to student success. The faculty not only bring teaching skills, but real-world experience to the classroom, making the learning environment a perfect balance of hands-on and academic training.
Mary obtained her Bachelor of Science from Eastern Michigan University (Dietetics Concentration) and her Master of Education (Health Education) from the University of Toledo. Mary is a registered/licensed dietitian who has held positions in diabetes education, clinical dietetics, and various community nutrition programs prior to her full time employment at the college. At Owens her courses have included: nutrition for allied health students, Basic Nutrition FNH121, the didactic courses for the first year dietetic students, and has served as a clinical preceptor for freshmen dietetic students. Mary also developed the clinical lab manual (COMACS) for the Owens dietetic students which incorporates the Standards of Practice as established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Mary is very enthusiastic about the courses she teaches. She has been an advocate of health and wellness and encourages her students to take the challenge to get fit- both by proper diet and exercise. Mary is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has held several positions with the Northwest Ohio Dietetic Association.
Beth graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. She completed the SC DHEC Office of Public Health Nutrition Dietetic Internship Program in Columbia, SC. Beth has over 12 years of experience as a Registered, Licensed Dietitian in healthcare with her passion being in long-term care and community nutrition. She has been an adjunct instructor at Owens since 2007; she has taught nutrition FNH 121, nutrition for the culinary arts and instructed supervised practice experiences for dietetic students. Full-time at Owens since 2011, she currently coordinates and instructs all supervised practice experiences for the dietetic technology students.
Joann Gruner, MBA, RD, LD is the Chair-Food, Nutrition & Hospitality. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University and her Master of Business Administration from Tiffin University. Her credentials include Registered Dietitian, Licensed Dietitian in the State of Ohio and ServSafe Food Protection certified. Joann has taught in the Dietetic Technician program at Owens and served as a Clinical Site Preceptor. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is active with the Northwest Ohio Dietetic Association having served as President, Treasurer and Council on Practice Committee. Current practice group affiliations include Dietetic Education of Practitioners and Clinical Nutrition Management.
