Profile of Excellence: Alan Sattler
Owens Community College Alumnus
Alan Sattler learned at a very young age good values and hard work pay off. Today, the son of a second-generation farmer is the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Bay Park Community Hospital. He also is a 1982 graduate of Owens Community College with an Associate of Applied Business Degree, Marketing and Sales Technology.
Alan's family lived on a farm, as did both of his grandparents, so working hard was the family's business. As young as age nine, Alan could be found helping his dad bale straw and fix machinery. This homegrown education translated into faith-based values, solid work ethic and a true appreciation for life.
During high school, Alan did a co-op at The Andersons in Maumee, Ohio. His boss gave him valuable advice. "He told me that with the dreams I had," remembers Alan, "I had to go to college."
After graduating from high school, Alan continued at The Andersons, but the goal of a college education was firmly planted in his mind. Shortly thereafter, he enrolled at Owens Community College in the marketing and sales program. "Owens' class size definitely fit my personality," he said. "I felt right at home."
Within two years, Alan graduated with his degree and transferred utilizing Owens' 2 + 2 program. Since he was paying his entire tuition bill, he appreciated the value he was getting for his money. Alan then married his high school sweetheart, Lisa, and graduated Cum Laude with his Bachelor of Science in Business. Knowing that you reap what you sow, he immediately began working on his Master's.
In 1985, Alan took his first position with The Toledo Hospital as a Financial Analyst. By the time he had received his Master's of Business Administration in June of 1988, he was on his second promotion-to Manager of Corporate Financial Planning & Forecasting-a position he held until 1991. Alan continued working hard and in 1994, was named the Director of Corporate Financial Services. In this position he was responsible for day-to-day operations of the business office, medical records and the financial operations of the Home Care Division.
Two years later, Alan was made the Vice President, Chief Financial Officer for ProMedica Physician Corporation where he hired physicians and oversaw all business aspects for the ProMedica network. In 2000, he was promoted to Senior Vice President and served as the chief administrative officer responsible for all business, contractual, financial and operational management for the multi-specialty physician network.
Alan's impressive career has brought him to Bay Park Community Hospital, where he was recently named Senior Vice President, Operations and Finance and Chief Financial Officer. In this role, Alan oversees the daily operations and management of the hospital and assists the president in overseeing physician relations, quality assurance and compliance programs.
When Alan reflects back on his beginnings at Owens, his thoughts are positive. "Owens creates the environment where students can get to know each other," he said. "That contact significantly enhances the experience." Owens Community College is proud to be a part of Alan's locally produced success.
