Profile of Excellence:
Carolyn Sue Chapman
Owens Community College Alumna
Carolyn Chapman, a 1991 Owens Community College alumna and Director on the Owens Community College Alumni Association Board, is a modern-day role model for college students wondering if college is the right place for them.
Carolyn, a Toledo native, graduated from Rogers High School in 1983. Once out of high school, she enrolled in Owens' Office Secretarial Technology program.
"I had been in a vocational secretarial program in high school, so the program at Owens was a natural progression," she said. "Also, I thought Owens would be the place for me because it seemed less intimidating than larger area colleges and universities."
Like many students, however, Carolyn had somewhat of a difficult time adjusting to college life.
"Starting out, it wasn't quite the high school atmosphere that I was used to," Carolyn said. "So, initially, I had some bumps in the road. Fortunately, the counselors at Owens, specifically Carol Russell, encouraged me and believed in my ability to succeed. That's something that has stayed with me ever since."
She added, "The staff and faculty at Owens were wonderful. Sandra Lass. Kay Heck. Rose Kuceyeski. All those folks were there when I started and were still there when I finished my degree. It reinforced, to me, the stability that Owens provides its students."
After experiencing life's "peaks and valleys," Carolyn obtained her associate's degree in Office Secretarial Technology in 1991 - eight years after first enrolling. She then went on to obtain her bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2002 and her master's degree in organizational management in 2004. In 2005, she also received her Professional in Human Resource Certification (PHR).
While obtaining her undergraduate and graduate degrees, she was with the Lucas County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for nine years where she held the positions of Early Intervention and HR Department Secretary, Human Resources Assistant and Human Resources Representative. Carolyn also previously served as the Human Resource Manager for Behavioral Connections of Wood County.
Currently, she serves as the Human Resources Manager for Kingston Care Center of Sylvania, where she is responsible for leading the human resource functions and related staff.
"I never imagined my educational and career path would lead me to where I am today," she said. "I just kept gradually building upon the education I received at Owens. I am fortunate that God has provided me with mentors, loved ones and opportunities for growth in all areas of my life. I hope that I can have the same impact on others."
Her community involvement includes time spent serving as a director on the Board of Directors with the Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio, being an active member of Mt. Pilgrim Church and facilitating PHR/SPHR preparation for the Toledo Area Human Resource Association (TAHRA).
In her spare time, Carolyn enjoys outdoor activities, Middle Eastern dance and whitewater rafting. She resides in Holland, Ohio.
