Darlene Fisher
Owens Community College Alumna
Darlene Fisher, an Owens Community College marketing alumna and current Board President of Toledo Public Schools, shares a vision with that of her alma mater. Like Owens, she is deeply committed to enhancing public education opportunities in her community.

A Toledo native, Darlene graduated from Whitmer High School in 1979. Once out of high school, she enrolled at Owens to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in marketing.

"I really liked the two plus two option at Owens and the idea that I could get started right in on my major at the time," Darlene said. "I was also really looking forward to learning from professors who had actually worked as marketing professionals at companies throughout Toledo."

Through Owens, Darlene embarked on her first marketing job - an internship with The Coca-Cola Company. There, she served as a sampling coordinator before going on to work full-time for the executive director, while also still attending Owens full-time.

She obtained her Associate of Arts in Marketing from Owens in 1981 before obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from The University of Toledo in 1995.

Since then, Darlene has been gainfully employed at a number of area businesses and organizations where she has concentrated on honing her marketing skills. Currently, she serves as Interactive Project Director at TNSInfo, where she is involved in conducting market research projects on the Internet.

While working full-time, she has also focused her energy on becoming an advocate for public education issues throughout Northwest Ohio.

"I have been active in public education for the last 15 years," Darlene said. "I have children in Toledo Public Schools and wanted to get involved with something where I thought I could make a difference."

A founding member of a local chapter of Parents for Public Schools (PPS), a national organization that works with area boards of education on reform issues, Darlene was elected Toledo School Board President in January 2006.

"Through my experience with PPS, I saw some opportunities in Toledo where families and parents could work better together for the benefit of the children," Darlene said. "As a member of the Toledo Public School Board, I hope to improve communication and allow for more of a connection between families and teachers."

She added, "It's important that we reform public education to do a better job for all of our kids across Toledo."

Darlene has also served as the Lucas County chair of Ohio Parents Week and is an active member of her church. In her spare time, Fisher enjoys spending quality time with her family, camping, reading and researching successful businesses. She resides in Toledo with her husband, Randy, and their two children.
