David Seeger was the first generation in his family to attend college. After graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 1974, he began working as a teller for National Bank of Oak Harbor and enrolled as a student at Owens Community College. He chose Owens for its strong academic reputation. He already had friends attending the College.
While at Owens, David grew and matured. He absolutely loved his classes and the way his professors challenged him to participate in discussions. David entered Owens as a shy and quiet student and graduated as a confident individual. "My Owens experience was the catalyst for my future development," says David. "In particular, Professor John Bruning was a tremendous influence on my personal growth."
In addition to working in the banking industry and attending Owens, David also took classes at the American Institute of Banking. In 1980, David graduated with his Associate of Arts degree majoring in Marketing and Sales Technology. Through his educational exposure and work experience, he was certain of his career path-he wanted to be a banker.
David's first position was as management trainee with First Federal of Delta. He quickly moved through the ranks as assistant manager to branch manager. During this period, David transferred his Owens education to a local four-year college to pursue his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.
In 1987, he moved to First Federal of Toledo and for two years served as a floating branch manager. In this special position he provided stable branch management in the absence of management. Additionally, he graduated with his Bachelor's degree Cum Laude in May 1988. "Owens gave me a great foundation to build upon," remembers David. "My credits transferred and I was on my way."
By 1989, David was ready to move into the not-for-profit niche of banking and became the Chief Executive Officer of the TPS Credit Union. He was responsible for strategic and tactical business planning and the daily operations of the full-service institution. Also this same year, David brought his extensive banking experience into Owens Community College's classroom. He became a member of Owens adjunct faculty instructing courses such as Corporate Financial Management, Introduction to Business, Business Professionalism and others.
Then in 1992, David joined Great Lakes Credit Union as the President, CEO and Director of Marketing. Great Lakes began in 1940 as the credit union for Owens Illinois employees. In the late '70s, it became a separate entity. David manages its $26 million portfolio that serves over 300 companies. Additionally, its services are offered to potential members that "live, work or worship" in Perrysburg, Sylvania and Toledo. As David explains, "At Great Lakes we focus on service and the customer. We are structured to provide the flexibility our members need." One such example is its wireless banking, allowing members to access their accounts anywhere and anytime through a palm pilot.
In an industry that has experienced tremendous change in the last 20 years, David has grown and benefited with the industry transformation. He empowers his people to provide the Midas touch to the people they serve. This quality, one-on-one approach is not new to David-he first learned it in an Owens Community College classroom.
