Janet Meacham, a 1998 graduate of Owens Community College, deserves credit for making our lives easier. The Regional Merchant Sales Officer for Fifth Third Bank supplies businesses with credit card capability to better serve their customers. If you make a purchase using your credit or debit card, Janet is probably behind the scene making it work.
In the mid '90s, Janet's life took an unexpected turn. Suddenly faced with being the single mother of two small children, she returned to the workforce as a customer service representative for Comerica Bank. Knowing that a degree would be vital to her ability to financially provide for her daughters' future, she began her education at Owens Community College.
"Owens offered the perfect blend of non-traditional classes that allowed me to go to school, work full time and still be very engaged in my daughters' activities," explains Janet. Since classes were offered in the evening, on the weekend, online and as telecourses, Janet could balance education with everyday life, without too much time away from home.
"It was important for me to demonstrate to my daughters that I could work hard and obtain my degree while being a good mom," remembers Janet. "Owens made it possible for me to achieve that goal."
Janet was able to put her education into practice immediately at Comerica. She was promoted to call center manager and then supervisor of the credit card department. In 2000 when Comerica sold their credit card portfolio, Janet came to Fifth Third Bank as a Merchant Sales Representative.
Janet and her merchant partner, Kelly Hendershott, have developed a unique team approach to better service Fifth Third customers. Recognizing that customer service is critical to success, this collaborative approach is working. Fifth Third is already the fifth largest credit card processor in the country. In addition, Janet and Kelly are making strong inroads to achieving their goal of award-winning President's Club status for their new business origination.
Not long ago, Janet returned to Owens as a professional to set up Owens Community College with credit card processing on its campuses.
Janet's positive experience at Owens runs deep within her family. Now remarried, her husband, Dennis, is a 1984 graduate and daughter, Amanda, a high school junior, is completing her first year at Owens as a Post Secondary Options student.
"I credit Owens Community College with preparing me for the business world and my ability to provide innovative customer service," she says.
Janet knows good credit when she sees it.
