Profile of Excellence: Jo Ann Romero
Owens Community College Alumna
Jo Ann Romero does not physically build houses, but she does everything she can to help those who do. She is the Program Administrator for the Builder Alliance Program at Owens Corning and a 1998 graduate of Owens Community College with an Associate of Applied Business, majoring in Information Processing.
By the time the Toledo native graduated from Waite High School in 1991, she already had a taste of the business world through a co-op program that combined a half-day of school with a half-day of work. This positive experience gave direction to Jo Ann's career choice-one in business.
A year after graduating, Jo Ann married and spent the next few years traveling as her husband was in the Army. In 1994, they returned to Toledo ready to build their future. While working as a Clinical Assistant for Lucas County Children Services, Jo Ann enrolled at Owens Community College. She loved the small classes and personal attention she received. "At Owens, all my instructors knew my name," says Jo Ann. "That is the way all colleges should be."
Jo Ann found all of her classes invaluable and provided the knowledge and skills she needed. After graduating, she started working at Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio as the Assistant to the CEO. Citing her co-workers and the challenging environment where people's lives were impacted, Jo Ann called it "the best job in the world."
Then in 2000, Jo Ann was presented with an opportunity at Owens Corning. Appreciating that Owens Corning is a leader in the industry, she could not pass at this chance and was hired as the Purchasing Administrative Assistant for the Information Technology group. "I was able to secure the job I wanted because of my Owens' degree," she says. "The proof is in the results."
In less than a year, Jo Ann was promoted to her current position. Recognizing her knowledge, skills and people-person approach, Owens Corning placed her as the point person for the builder alliance program. Establishing a one-stop-shop, Jo Ann interacts with approximately 3,000 builders that participate. She provides support from answering product questions to boosting rebates by maximizing their purchasing power.
Taking advantage of the degree completion partnership between Owens Community College and the University of Findlay, in December 2002, Jo Ann graduated Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Findlay. Today, she is attending graduate school.
Wanting to give back, Jo Ann is active outside of the office. She is the President of the International Association of Administrative Professionals and this fall started teaching keyboarding at Owens Community College. "When my students look at me, I hope they realize that I have been in their shoes," says Jo Ann, "and obtaining their goals is a few steps away."
