Profile of Excellence: Jenny Stamm
Owens Community College Alumna
Jenny Stamm is the Manager of the Garden Store for Glass City Landscape and takes pride in the growth the business has experienced in the three years she has been part of the team. Jenny is also a 2001 graduate of Owens Community College with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Landscape and Turf Management Technology.

Prior to graduating from Maumee High School in 1997, Jenny was undecided on her college major. "I wanted to keep all options open," she said. "It was the beginning of a great adventure."

After graduation, Jenny attended an out-of-state college. The second year she worked to save for tuition at Occupational Care Consultants as an Administrative Assistant. She quickly proved she was a hard worker and quick study. After opening a new office in Oregon, Jenny was promoted to Front Office Supervisor. She liked the work, but was still exploring options. It was a traffic detour that led her to her "field of dreams" career.

"I was going to Spring Meadows and wanted to avoid construction on Airport Highway," tells Jenny. "I drove past Glass City Landscape and felt compelled to stop." She told co-owner, Ken Gilson, she wanted to work for him. Unfortunately, he was not hiring. Albeit, Jenny made a strong first impression-he hired her part time shortly thereafter. Within six months, Jenny was working full time. When one of her co-workers told her that Owens Community College offered a degree in her landscape field, she was impressed. Eager to learn, Jenny started in the Fall of 1999.

She remembers her first class-Woody Landscape Plants-where she was to learn common and botanical names for trees, shrubs and plants, and their growing traits and characteristics. As Jenny describes, "It was a very difficult class-like learning a new language." As is her style, she passed with flying colors and credits Owens Associate Professor Chris Foley with impacting her positive start. "Chris Foley taught me so much," says Jenny, "all while making it interesting and fun."

Owens' program is structured with unlimited opportunities for students to make contacts in their industry and explore niche career paths. Jenny took advantage of every opportunity. Also, she was selected as the first student representative to the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association and was chosen as the Owens' Commencement Student Speaker.

When Jenny graduated from Owens, she was ready to grow and she recognized the unlimited potential at Glass City Landscape. She was right! The growth of Jenny and Glass City has been explosive. She has computerized the business and streamlined processes. With the opening of their new garden center, Jenny has expanded product offerings adding unique garden, birding, and décor items. Additionally, she is up-to-date in pesticides, insecticides and fungicides and is an Ohio Certified Nursery Technician.

Jenny looks forward to the future and ways to better serve Glass City Landscape customers. Though, she is quick to add that Owens Community College was key in her ability to achieve. "If you want to succeed," she says, "Owens will help make it happen."
