Profile of Excellence: Jim Welling
Owens Community College Alumnus
When Jim Welling enrolled at Owens Community College in 1977, little did he know he would spend the better part of 20 years there influencing students' lives academically and athletically.
The 1980 Owens graduate guides students both in the classroom and on the court as the Selective Admissions Coordinator in the Office of Academic Enhancement and Counseling and Head Men's Basketball Coach.
"When I graduated from high school, athletic scholarship opportunities were extremely limited," remembers Jim, a Luckey native and Eastwood High School graduate. "Owens afforded me the option to play collegiate level sports and still get a great education."
Initially, Jim enrolled in the Marketing and Sales program. "During the College's annual fundraiser, I was the leading calendar sales person," Jim laughs. "I actually won a television for my efforts."
Despite his sales success, Jim transitioned to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Recreational Technology in order to meet his long-term career goals. He also earned a spot on the men's basketball team. "I worked very hard on my education," said Jim, "but my passion was playing basketball."
After graduating, Jim transferred to a local four-year university with the hope of continuing to play basketball-but did not make the team. Instead of giving up his dream, Jim asked Coach Bob Nichols if he could observe practices. Not only did Coach Nichols allow him to do so, but he also shared with Jim his leadership techniques, recruitment practices and inspirational philosophies.
Jim earned his Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Health in 1984 - and he wanted to be a teacher and also be involved in an athletic program. Certified to teach grades K-12, Jim substituted in Toledo-area schools for the next three years while waiting for a full-time position to open. Also in 1984, he was hired at Owens to be the assistant men's basketball coach under Coach Jamie Gill and worked part time in the Admissions Office, performing student intake interviews-a job he truly loved!
When a full-time Admissions position opened at Owens, Jim could not pass on the opportunity. In 1986, Jim was promoted to Head Basketball Coach.
Today, Jim Welling is setting records and impacting lives at Owens. In his admissions job, Jim counsels to students enrolled in College's Health Technologies programs. With Owens' enrollment at an all-time high, Jim's experience in developing academic strategies and his student-focused approach is an asset to the students he assists.
On the court, his stellar performance continues thanks in part to his coaching philosophy. Believing that a student-athlete needs to succeed at both, Jim takes his role as mentor and coach quite seriously. This approach translates into an 86% graduation rate of the students he has coached and Jim achieving 474 wins, including two NJCAA national championships, as he nears the start of his 18th season.
Taken from Coach Welling's playbook, the final drill is simply this: "Owens is the perfect place to prepare you for success. We will help you every step of the way."
