Profile of Excellence: Kaye L. Koevenig
Owens Community College Alumna
Kaye Koevenig says that an education counts. She should know. Kaye Koevenig is the Assistant Controller for Owens Community College and a 1992 Owens graduate with an Associate of Applied Business Degree, majoring in Accounting Technology.

When Kaye graduated from Waite High School, she was in the top ten of her class. This achievement placed her in the running for an Owens Community College academic scholarship. This full-ride opportunity was offered to local high schools for a student that finished in the top ten and chose to attend Owens.

Kaye applied for entrance into Owens and for the academic scholarship - she received both. Also, just prior to starting classes, she was hired as a student worker in Owens' Business Affairs office.

The youngest of three children, Kaye always had an interest in accounting. She found the transition between high school and Owens to be very easy. "Owens Community College had a lot to offer me," she said. "Being a student worker gave me hands-on experience in my career field with the flexibility to obtain my education." This winning combination meant that Kaye could attend class full time, work 20 hours a week and be home by 5:00 p.m. to concentrate on homework.

Owens' Controller recognized that Kaye was a hard and capable worker. So in 1987, Kaye was hired part time as a Staff Accountant - Special Projects. Six months later, when the Business Affairs' staff accountant left, Kaye was promoted to full time. In 1992, she graduated from Owens with her degree. "By working at Owens I understood the importance of higher education and the positive results," Kaye tells. "I decided to continue for my Bachelor's."

Owens has established articulation agreements with other universities, so Kaye was accepted as a junior at Heidelberg College. By 1996 she had received her Bachelor of Business Degree. After taking a year to catch her breath, Kaye began a Masters program with the concentration on Public Administration graduating in December 1998. "My education gave me a well-rounded approach to public service," she said. "I brought that knowledge and experience back to Owens Community College."

That skill set paid off. In spring of 1999, Kaye was promoted to the Assistant Controller's position at Owens. She now prepares internal financial statements, reports to the various required state agencies and analyzes and approves financial activities for Owens Community College. "I experience and witness daily the positive impact Owens has on people's lives," says Kaye. "I love being part of this team." Kaye pays this impact forward as a member of Owens' Alumni Association Board, Erie Shores Credit Union Board and as an active member of the Junior League of Toledo.

When asked about her successful equation, Kaye describes, "Education equals opportunity and it can all begin at Owens."
