Profile of Excellence: Lisa Werling
Owens Community College Alumna
Lisa Werling graduated in Fall 2002 from Owens Community College with an Associate of Applied Business Degree in Business Management Technology. She is also a great judge of people and their abilities. Using this skill, she finds the right person for the right job at The Andersons, Inc.
In fall 1999, Lisa began her career at The Andersons by working evenings in the computer room. New to the Toledo area, she wanted to continue her education and found that Owens Community College, with its flexible class schedule and impressive learning environment, was a perfect choice to obtain her degree. "I had taken courses at Terra Community College, but most of the credits did not transfer," she explained. "So I started over at Owens and it proved to be a great decision."
Lisa thrived in her new educational surroundings, graduating with highest honors and a 4.0 grade point average. As she describes it, "Owens was an excellent place to go to school-I had a hard time leaving!" Lisa remembers that Owens Community College's instructors brought real world experience into the classroom and consistently encouraged the students to succeed. By putting into practice what they taught, the instructors also served as role models and mentors throughout her studies. "As a result of my Owens education, I am taking on additional responsibilities at The Andersons and have the confidence to do my job well," says Lisa.
When there is a job opening at one of The Andersons' retail stores-located in Maumee, Toledo, and Woodville-the department manager contacts Lisa to fill the position. She recruits candidates, interviews the qualified applicants and narrows the pool to recommend the best possible choices for the position. "I love to hire Owens students and graduates. I know, from personal experience, they receive a quality education and the skills necessary to succeed." After associates are hired, Lisa covers The Andersons' policies and procedures through new hire orientations.
When recruiting, Lisa mentors others to improve their knowledge and skill portfolio. When additional education would expand their career options, Lisa promotes Owens Community College as the place to go. Touting the diversity of programs and people, she says, "I loved the great mixture of people and perspectives in my small classes-from a young Russian woman to the man from South America. By sharing each other's life experiences, it really opened my eyes to other cultures and the world."
Today, Lisa has transferred her credits to the University of Toledo to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree. With just seventeen credit hours to finish, she is well on her way. "I have always had the desire to succeed and my Owens' education has helped me do just that," Lisa concludes.
