Profile of Excellence: Mark Carr
Owens Community College Alumnus
Mark Carr grew up in Walbridge and graduated from Lake High School in 1977. He had one goal for college-to play basketball. That fall, he started college and played ball for Adrian College in Michigan.

Dick Honner, Owens Community College men's basketball coach, convinced Mark to come home. In 1978, Mark returned to his stomping grounds. He enrolled at Owens in the Financial Management program and became part of the Owens Express basketball team.

Once on Owens' campus, Mark's collegiate experience was a three-point shot! He thoroughly enjoyed the banking and finance program and the personal attention he received from the faculty. Mark was meeting a lot of people, having great fun, and playing the sport he loved. "I made lifetime friends at Owens Community College," Mark says. "It was an all around great opportunity."

By 1980, he graduated with his Associate of Applied Business degree, majoring in Financial Management Technology. Just prior to his May graduation, Owens' Job Placement Office connected Mark with a potential position at Mid Am Bank, today known as Sky Bank. The current Senior Chairman of the Sky Financial Group, Edward Reiter, hired Mark as a bank teller. He started his 23-year banking career that June.

Mark's first position as a teller enabled the bank to assess his capabilities while he learned the industry-a traditional banking practice with new employees. The bank liked what it saw in Mark. After 10 months, he moved into a position with the Collections Department. Soon thereafter, Mark was in charge of the department-a difficult position he held for almost four years. "Collection business is very hard from an emotional standpoint," he said. "I wanted to move into a niche where I could help people get started."

Mark moved into branch management. As a Branch Manager, Mark ran seven branches for Sky Bank and was responsible for all aspects of that business. The corporate philosophy was that the branch manager was the president of that location. Focusing on Sky's strong customer service, Mark enjoyed providing a full range of services to their customers-from commercial, consumer and mortgage loans to checking and savings accounts.

In 2000, Mark was ready for a challenge and took his banking career in a new direction as a Mortgage Originator. With his 20 years of banking experience and a solid core service focus, Mark understood how to take care of Sky's customers. "If I take care of the customer in front of me," he said, "the rest will take care of itself."

For the last three years, Mark has translated his philosophy into success. This year alone, he has written over $60 million in mortgage lending, one mortgage at a time. By matching the favorable interest rates with innovative Sky Bank programs, he enjoys helping others make their dream home a reality.

As Mark reflects on his own dreams, he is proud they have become reality. "I went to Owens Community College, and I have done well in my profession." He adds, "The education and people I met at Owens were beneficial to my success."
