Profile of Excellence: Rob Robincheck
Owens Community College Alumnus
Rob Robincheck is a winner-literally. He won a $1,000 scholarship from Vector Marketing Corporation for finishing first among the company's national student sales representatives for Cutco Cutlery. Receiving a scholarship was nothing new for Rob, a 2002 Owens Community College graduate with an Associate of Applied Business Degree. This scholarship marked the eighth he won for his impressive sales record.
When Rob graduated from Otsego High School in 1997, he knew college was his next step, but he wanted to pay for it himself. As he explains, "I felt that if I was investing my own dollars, it would motivate me to do a better job. Going to Owens made sense. I could afford to pay for school and the quality of my education was above and beyond other schools in our area."
The summer prior to starting at Owens, Rob answered an ad in the newspaper to sell Cutco Cutlery. Vector Marketing targets college students for its sales force because the built-in job flexibility is conducive for students. In addition to providing work opportunities, each year Vector offers scholarship money based on the full-time students' achievements. Rob thought if he worked hard, he could pay for his education. He was right.
Rob's investment in his education produced positive returns. "The professors at Owens Community College are outstanding. Anytime I asked for help, they were more than willing to help me," says Rob. He remembers the semester he took accounting and how his professor met him repeatedly after class to work one-on-one. "Accounting was not my strong suit," he laughs. "The experience helped shape my life."
Wanting to give back to Owens, Rob recently presented a $1,000 check to Dr. Myrna DeAustria, Dean of Business and Public Service Technologies. The money, given on behalf of Vector, resulted from Rob finishing first in the national contest. "It feels great to give back to the College that gave so much to me," he said.
For now, Rob is well on his way to his next goal-induction in Vector's Hall of Fame. This honor is reserved for the sales representatives that reach a half million dollars in lifetime sales. Considering Rob has already reached $450,000, it is only a matter of time before he earns another dividend on his Owens investment.
