Owens Community College Alumnus
Steve Parks, a 1991 Owens Community College electrical/electronics graduate, knows what it takes to turn a dream into reality.

Steve, a Perrysburg native, graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1981. After high school, he served four years in the United States Army where he gained experience as a videotape editor - experience that would certainly come in handy later down the road.

In 1986, Steve enrolled at Owens to further his education and gain hands-on experience in electronics. Steve continued to work two jobs while pursuing his college degree. He was determined to succeed.

"Going to school while working two jobs was definitely difficult at times," Steve said. "I really enjoyed the instructors I had at Owens. They helped me pull it together when I needed a little guidance."

In 1991, Steve graduated from Owens and worked at Buckeye CableSystem as a part-time Master Control Operator where he had been employed since 1989. He was promoted in 1992 to Lead Master Control Operator. Steve was again recognized for his excellent job performance in 1993, when he was promoted to Supervisor of both Master Control and TV5.

Steve remained Supervisor until 1998 when he was asked to become the Network Operations Center Manager. As NOC Manager, he was responsible for designing, rebuilding and managing the entire Network Operations Center.

As successful as he was, however, Steve could not get over the notion of someday owning his own business. In June 2005, he left his career at Buckeye CableSystem for the pursuit of his lifelong dream.

"After working more than 25 years for other businesses, I decided it was finally time to pursue my dream of starting my own business," Steve said. "With my passion for fine wines, opening a wine and cigar store just seemed like a natural fit."

With the help of his wife and co-owner, Paige, and a number of other friends and local contractors, Steve opened Aficionado Wine & Cigars, Ltd. in the Shoppes at RiverPlace in Perrysburg in September 2005.

Now a successful business owner, Steve appreciates the path he has taken and looks forward to serving the Northwest Ohio community for years to come.

"I've gotten where I am today through hard work and dedication," Steve said. "I learned a lot of those attributes from life experiences I've had along the way.

Steve added, "Owens gave me the confidence I needed to be successful in the working world. I especially would like to thank Owens for helping me grow into a productive member of society."

Steve, who enjoys fishing, hunting and golfing, currently resides in Perrysburg with Paige and their two daughters, Riley (9) and Hannah (7).
