Profile of Excellence: Sara A. Ritter
Owens Community College Alumna
Sara Ritter has been selected as the Owens Community College class representative and will address over 600 graduates during the 2003 Spring Commencement ceremony on May 15th. She graduates with Honors and an Associate of Applied Science Degree, majoring in Early Childhood Education Technology.
Born and raised in Oregon, she graduated from Clay High School, where she was active in the band and flag core, student government and National Honor Society. She was the Class of 2000's Valedictorian.
While Sara knew that college was her next step, she was uncertain as to what career she wanted to pursue. She started taking general college courses at an area university-hoping to discover a path that would excite her-focusing on communications and working with children. After completing one year, Sara transferred to Owens Community College.
Sara recalls her first semester at Owens while taking classes from Pam Chibucos and Kerry Garretson, "The energy, excitement and passion they taught with was catching. They sucked me right in and I knew I was on the right path."
The strength of Owens' Early Childhood Education program is the hands-on approach to learning. "We learned how to teach, the tools to use and had the opportunity to practice in a real setting," describes Sara. Citing Owens' high standards, which require almost twice the lab experience as other programs, she says, "At Owens I learned a lot in my field, which gives me a tremendous advantage when I transfer in the fall. My Owens' education is invaluable" Sara describes herself as an energetic and caring individual who enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her community involvement includes singing in a youth band and serving as a part-time staff member with the Children's Ministry at Cedar Creek Church in Perrysburg. She plans the curriculum for over 200 preschool children each Sunday throughout the year.
She is currently the president of the Student Association for Young Children at Owens. The student organization's many initiatives include organizing community activities and events for area residents, which center on the development of educating young children. She has just completed student teaching at Jay Shuer Preschool in Oregon.
Sara credits her success to the Owens faculty in the Early Childhood Education Department and the passion and energy they display while providing guidance to their students. "The positive influence that the Owens faculty has had on my educational experience is something I will never forget," she says. "They truly love teaching and want me to succeed as a teaching professional."
