Profile of Excellence: Tony Desch
Owens Community College Alumnus
As a 1996 Owens Community College graduate, Tony Desch has an Associate of Applied Business Degree, majoring in Industrial Marketing. For the last five years, he has been a Financial and Insurance Representative for Toledo-based Savage & Associates.
Tony credits his Owens' education and participation on Owens' nationally ranked baseball team for teaching him how to successfully juggle the demands of his career. "I was going to school full time, playing baseball and studying," he said. "I was managing a 60-70 hour week even before I entered the real world." Tony realized that the fuller his plate, the more efficient he needed to be on all fronts.
Prior to graduating from St. Francis de Sales High School in 1994, Tony began evaluating college options-with two criteria-great education and playing college level baseball. Tony sat down with John Bruning, recently retired Professor for Owens. That conversation helped Tony head in the right direction.
By August 1994, Tony was an Owens freshman and a member of the baseball team. From his classes to sports-Owens was a great choice. "With my industrial marketing focus, I benefited from my professors' immense experience," says Tony. "Tom Deckelman and John Bruning's knowledge was practical and dead-on to what I needed to know." In the spring, Tony began working out six days a week with Owens' baseball team. The following year, Tony and his teammates finished fourth in the nation in the NJCAA Division III World Series. "By going to Owens, I had the opportunity to play sports while getting a great education," tells Tony. "I was challenged on the field and in the classroom."
During Tony's last semester, he did an internship at Sherwin Williams. These internships typically prove to be a cornerstone that propels graduates into their career fields. Sherwin Williams loved Tony's knowledge and performance and offered him a position after graduation. "I think Owens' internships are a huge plus for their students," said Tony. "It gives the graduate a competitive advantage."
Tony graduated in 1996, continued at Sherwin Williams and transferred to a four-year institution to complete his Bachelor's degree. By 1999, he had completed it and accepted a position at Savage and Associates. Recognizing his strengths-people and money-it was a perfect fit.
Today, Tony is a financial consultant for businesses to identify competitive employee benefit programs and for individuals to procure life insurance and investment planning. He has been a qualifying member of the Million Dollar Round Table and has been awarded the Savage & Associate New Associate of the Year award. "The combination of sports and education really helped me after school," Tony said. "I learned the value of taking the next step with the drive to make it happen."
