Watching the college grow. Having met so many students trying to make a go of their lives. Watching their faces when they receive their diploma after all their hard work even if it took a couple of years to complete their degree. All those that had to work and go to school to support their family. It made me feel good about myself that I could of made an impact on their life.

I believe I was in the second class that started out at Penta County graduating June 11th, 1972. Owens is special to me because at age 32 I decided to further my education in search of better employment. This wasn't an easy change at my age and there were times I felt like throwing in the towel. Because of the encouraging, nurturing and patience of the staff and faculty, I was able to come through doing remarkably well. I would like to help the youth I work with realize their potentials as the staff and faculty at Owens did with me. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the 40 years of educational celebration at Owens Community College.

My special memory comes from Commencement in December 2003.

The College Staff was missing. For those of you who have never attended a Commencement ceremony, the Staff bears the College Seal and is carried by the faculty member who leads the processional. For this Commencement, the faculty member was Dr. David Miller.

Michelle Marczak and I were told the Staff was missing just 20 minutes before Commencement was to begin! We searched storage areas of the SHAC and came up empty. We asked Dr. Unger and he thought it might be in Administration Hall. We sprinted to my car parked near the CFPA entrance. But once we were outside, we instead commandeered a Safety and Security patrol vehicle to take us across campus as quickly as possible. In the Board Room, we found the Staff and then returned to the SHAC 3 minutes before Commencement was to begin.

It was an exhilarating 17 minutes that I'll never forget!

The Staff now has a specific storage location so that it never goes missing again.

I have a lot of fond memories of all the years I have been here. I have seen many new faces and buildings develop. I started out in the old library and moved into the old trailer that was between the two rows of the old barracks that housed the Copy and Mail Center. From there I also was receptionist for the President's Office. I have enjoyed most of my time here and will always cherish the memories and friends that I have made while here. I also was able to complete my degree in law enforcement and went through the basic police academy while raising two children on my own. My life has become so much better for all that I have gained from my employment and association with Owens College.

I was hired to join Owens in the Fall of 2002 as the first full-time Alumni Affairs Manager. When I arrived at Administration Hall on my first day, David Miller was also walking into the building. I had known David for years through my church, but did not realize he was a professor at Owens. He made me feel so welcomed at Owens from the moment I walked in the door. I quickly realized how many lives that Owens Community College touches of people that I know in the community!
