Artist John Gutoskey Solo Show, "Queerly Beloved"
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM River House Arts and Owens Community Center for Fine and Performing Arts are pleased to present Queerly Beloved, an exhibition of works by John Gutoskey on view in the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery through November 6. "Queer is, by definition, whatever is at odds with the normal, the legitimate, the dominant..." - David Halperin Through assemblage, collage, printmaking, and a ?queer gaze,? John Gutoskey explores issues related to identity and spirituality in the 21st Century. As an artist, designer, and consummate collector, he investigates how these concepts are constructed and how they function when one identifies as, or is defined by our culture as, ?queer.? Teaming with literary and historical references, popular imagery, found photos, and every-day objects, John?s colorful and inventive works reveal the interior world of an extrovert. Flea market and cathedral reliquary collide. Shrine and game board vie for attention; enigmatic messages lurk beneath happy coincidences and bizarre juxtapositions. His miniature universes are topical and deeply personal, yet broadly appealing. John has a BFA in theater design with a minor in sculpture from Webster University in St. Louis. He earned his MFA from the University of Michigan?s Penny Stamps School of Art & Design along with a certificate in LGBTQ Studies from UM?s Department of Women's Studies. His work has been exhibited across the US including NYC, Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Detroit, Austin, New Orleans, Houston, Des Moines, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Atlanta. A recent series of work, Shaman Johnny, is on view at the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson, Michigan through October 10. John Gutoskey lives and works in Ann Arbor. Walter E.
