Common Time

Common Time encourages students to meet one another across the Department of Creative Arts and Media programs, build new relationships, discuss projects and learn about resources and opportunities.

January 23 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Podcasting: How to Conduct and Record an Interview

Create your own podcast featuring an interview. Rob will cover the basic, and surprisingly easy technical elements, as well as how to conduct an engaging interview.

Host: Rob Thomas is the Broadcast Media and Technology lead instructor and advisor for the Owens OutComm Student Media Center. He has over 35 years of experience as a multimedia producer in the broadcast, marketing, and communications industries, working with both for-profit and not-for-profit businesses.


February 6 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Starting fresh at Tiffin University and Summertime at Lakeside Marblehead

Join us for a session about transferring to Tiffin University and learning new skills, both in school and at a summer job.

Host: Kayden Rospert graduated from Owens Community College in May 2025, with a degree in Music Business Technology. He is currently studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Music at Tiffin University.

Career Paths which you may not have considered!

Join us for a discussion of David’s “less thought of” path working in the music industry and options that may work for you after graduation.

Host: David Brehm graduated with honors from Owens Music Business Technology program in 2017 and was part of the group that launched OCCR. After graduation, he started as a Sales Engineer at Sweetwater Sound for 2 ½ years before he took 2 years to run and then sell the family business. He is now a Merchandising Analyst at Sweetwater, running the bundle team.

Let’s Talk!

Join the conversation to share and learn some helpful communication tips and strategies. Whether we’re the sender or receiver, we can all improve the process!

Host: Kimberly Menke is a Psychology professor at Owens.  Her favorite topics to teach and learn about are leadership, relationships, and human development and discovery.  She loves genuine conversations, exploring, collecting memories, and the beauty of nature.  Her favorite color is blue.


March 20 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Is Event Management Right for You?

Have you ever been interested in managing a venue or events? Was there a concert, wedding, or play you attended and wondered about all the interworkings to make it successful? Well, this is the session for you! Shelby will discuss different examples of venues, how they operate, and the leadership positions involved. She will also provide insight on her position as a Center for Fine and Performing Arts Manager at Owens and what her day-to-day looks like.

Host: Shelby Stoots is the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Manager at Owens Community College. She is from the Northwest Ohio Area and has worked at Owens for over 6 years and was originally hired as the Curator of the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery. Shelby has a BA from Bowling Green State University with a focus in 3D Studies and a Minor in Arts Management. In her free time, she welds automotive-themed sculptures, collects Hot Wheels cars, and races her little white sports car with the Sports Car Club of America, Northwest Ohio Region on the weekends.

Unpacking Digital Communication at Digital 55 

Learn about the world of Digital Marketing and how Visual Communication plays a key role in effective digital communication. This session details the connection between graphic design, digital marketing, and social media management, and will explore the process of working with a design team while maintaining effective communication with clients and co-workers.

Host: Bryce Weaver: My name is Bryce Weaver. I’m a graphic designer and digital communicator currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in visual communication technology at BGSU. I’ve loved design and digital arts for as long as I can remember, and I was thrilled to be able to turn my passion into a career through the VCT program at Owens.


April 17 | Noon – 1 p.m.

Audio Engineer, Freelancing and Beyond!

What exactly does an Audio Engineer for an on-hold marketing company do? How can you help to make yourself a valuable asset to your employer or internship host?  How can you be open-minded when it comes to job hunting?  Josh will also discuss the importance of personal projects and freelance work.

Host: Josh Jump is a 2021 graduate of Owens Community College with an AAS in Music Business Technology. He is an Audio Engineer at MadAveGroup – a family of agencies, mostly geared toward Business Voice’s “On Hold Marketing” services.
