What is the Federal Work-Study Program?
The FWS program provides jobs for college students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses. Students can be employed in a variety of positions including work related to their area of study on-campus, off-campus, or with a community service program/organization (America Reads – reading tutor, America Counts – math tutor, etc.).
How do I find out if I am qualified for Federal Work-Study?
To be eligible for the FWS program you must meet the Financial Aid qualifications. Your first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If financial need is demonstrated as determined by Student Financial Aid, FWS can be manually awarded once the student is hired for a FWS job. Increasing or decreasing FWS eligibility may affect other financial aid. What is Off-Campus Federal Work-Study?
Off-campus sites will usually be with non-profit organizations or public agencies, and the work performed must be in the public interest. Federal Work-Study jobs should be relevant to your course of study to the maximum extent possible.
How do I apply for Off-Campus Federal Work Study?
Students who are interested in Off-Campus FWS need to complete a Student Employee Application at https://jobs.owens.edu. For most positions, you will be required to attach a resume. To view the FWS positions, click Search Jobs; under position type, select Student/FWS; click Search. You must apply for each position you are interested in. Click on job title to view the posting. Click on Apply for this Job at the top of the page to apply for that position.
If I qualify for Federal Work-Study am I guaranteed a job?
No. Students who are only interested in working on-campus will be contacted by the supervisor(s) who are interested in interviewing them. Your application will be released to the supervisor once it is verified that you meet the qualifications for Student Employment. Students interested in off-campus FWS jobs must apply for each position they are interested in. Once eligibility is confirmed, your resume will be forwarded to the employer(s). The employer(s) will then decide whether to contact you for an interview and ultimately if they would like to hire you.
How many hours a week can I work?
A FWS student can work up to 24 hours per week, with a qualifying GPA. However the number of hours per week will also depend on the scheduling needs of your employer and the total amount of your FWS award.
How much can I earn?
The total work study award depends on the level of need and the funding level of Owens Community College. Earnings will be based on the FWS award amount. Currently, student employees are paid the Ohio minimum wage per hour for all positions except math and reading tutoring which pay at least $10/hour.
Can I work as a Student Employee if I do not qualify for Federal Work-Study?
Yes, many on campus student employee positions do not require you to be FWS eligible. However you would not be eligible for any off-campus FWS or on campus FWS only positions.
