EDU 101 - Child Development
This course explores the developing child's essential characteristics and needs from conception through school age. It includes basic theories, research methods, significant studies and the fundamental principles of child growth and development. The course examines age appropriate expectations for physical, social, emotional, cognitive, language and aesthetic domains as well as individual differences among children and the interrelationships among the developmental domains. Development is discussed within the context of multiple influences such as: appropriate education, play, and early intervention experiences; family and peer relationships; the child's own personality and self concept; and societal and cultural influences. Emphasis will be placed on applying this knowledge to creating healthy, respectful, challenging and supportive learning environments that foster children's development and learning.
