Counseling Services is available to support faculty and staff members of Owens State Community College in addressing concerns for students.
Faculty and staff members who have concerns about the safety or mental health of a student may contact Counseling Services (567) 661-2107 during business hours to discuss further. For emergency situations, please contact the Department of Public Safety (567) 661-7575 immediately.
Faculty and staff may refer those students who they have concerns about to Counseling Services.
Reasons for referrals may include but are not limited to:
- symptoms of depression and/or anxiety
- decline in academic performance
- increased absences
- family issues
- other mental health concerns
- adjustment issues.
Whenever possible, faculty members are expected to address individual concerns with students in private prior to making a referral to Counseling Services.

A student is considered to be experiencing a crisis when his/her mental or emotional condition results in a behavior that constitutes an imminent danger to that individual or another person. This may include:
- Suicidal ideations, plans, or attempts
- Homicidal ideations, plans, or actions
- Loss of contact with reality, which may include hallucinations, extreme confusion, unresponsiveness, uncontrolled behavior, extremely irrational or incoherent speech
- Experiencing recent trauma or abuse
- Students demonstrating distressed behavior (i.e., agitated, hostile, aggressive, violent, and exceedingly argumentative, etc.)
Students, Faculty, Staff, and other members of the campus community are encouraged to report situations that may be in conflict with established standards of behaviors as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct (which can be found here: https://www.owens.edu/conduct/code.pdf), or if members of the campus community are exhibiting concerning behavior that may result in harmful, threatening, or disruptive conduct by using the Incident Reporting Form found at: https://publicdocs.maxient.com/incidentreport.php?OwensCC
Crisis Intervention Protocols:
- Whenever possible, faculty/staff should attempt to address crisis with a student one-to-one in order to help de-escalate the crisis situation (Please see Counseling Services website for tips on assisting students in distress).
- If student is in imminent danger of harm to self or others, first contact Department of Public Safety (567) 661-7575; then contact Counseling Services to consult regarding next steps.
- When available, Counseling Services will meet with student to complete a risk assessment.
- Faculty/Staff can escort student to Counseling Services or Counseling Services clinician can come to the student if escorting the student does not seem feasible at the time.
- If a student is determined to be at moderate or high risk of harm to self or others and is in a program which requires clinical assignment or providing services in the community (i.e., nursing, internships), Counseling Services will work with the overseeing faculty and student to arrange for alternative options until the student's risk level decreases.
- Counseling Services will work with the student to identify plans for follow up care and obtain necessary releases of information to ensure that student has followed up with referrals and recommendations.
