Guidelines for Advising using Online Chat

  1. The goal for using the online chat is to provide quick and basic advising for students.
  2. Guidelines for using online advising chat
    1. Advisors should provide a response to the student as quick as possible.
    2. If an advisor is busy with another chat, advisors should respond to an incoming chat with a comment. Advisors may request that the student wait until Advisor can fully answer their question. Advisors should provide responses in the order the chats are received.
    3. Respond to all questions. If the question requires a more in depth answer, please utilize Owens email or setup an appointment during your office hours.
    4. Online chat is only to be used for educational purposes and must correspond with Owens policies and procedures.
    5. No confidential information shall be exchanged through the online advising chat.
    6. Advisors are expected to chat in a conversational manner using correct spelling, grammar, and capitalization. Use "chat speak" only when deemed appropriate.
  3. Guidelines for Students using online advising chat
    1. Students should be aware of Owens Community College student code of conduct.
    2. Any offensive remarks or inappropriate behavior will be immediately banned and possible disciplinary action may be taken.
    3. Students are expected to chat in a conversational manner using correct spelling, grammar, and capitalization.
    4. Online chat should only be used for educational purposes and correspond with Owens Community College policies and procedures.
    5. No confidential information shall be exchanged through the online advising chat.

Admissions respects the privacy of our students; however, a guarantee of confidentiality of files, electronic mail, or other information stored or transmitted electronically is not offered. This policy is intended to let users know that any information that is collected by the chat services will be used to help analyze the amount and types of questions we are being asked. This helps determine appropriate staffing levels and aides in training.

Personal data and chat logs will be kept strictly confidential and will only be accessible to authorized staff. We will not disclose any personal data we collect from you to any party in a manner that would identify you, except where required by law or in order to fulfill your service request.
