Second-year Dental Hygiene students will present their informative posters from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4 in the Math/Science Galleria at the 5th annual Dental Hygiene Symposium. The topics include:
- Tooth Be Told, Your Gut’s Involved: The correlation between Periodontal Disease and Gut Disorders
- The Noise You Can’t Ignore: Hearing Loss in Dentistry: Hearing Loss in the Dental Field
- Menopause Bites Back: Gum Health in the Age of Hot Flashes: Menopausal effects on the periodontium
- A Bidirectional Bridge: The Association Between PCOS and Periodontal Disease: The relationship between PDD and PCOS and how they interact with each other
- Laser-Focused Relief: Advancing the Treatment of Dentinal Hypersensitivity: Laser treatment for dentinal hypersensitivity
- The Tongue Tells All: Clinical Signs of Systemic Conditions: Tongue coatings and their ties to systemic conditions
- Soothe and Heal: The Impact of Aloe Vera on the Mouth: Aloe vera’s role in oral care
- More Than a Smile: Uncovering the Hidden Effects of Stress and Anxiety on Oral Health: Mental health problems’ effects on the oral cavity
- Crafting Confident Smiles: Dentition and Oral Care in Down Syndrome: Dentition for individuals with down syndrome
- Beyond the Snore: Sleep Apneas Dental Delima: Sleep apnea and sleeping devices and their effect on the oral cavity
- Stem “Seeds” in Dentistry: Regrowing the Future: Stem Cells in dentistry: Regeneration within oral cavity
This open forum event allows the Dental Hygiene students the opportunity to educate and bring awareness to the public, students, staff and dental professionals. On Nov. 8, the Dental Hygiene students will take their informative posters to the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association Annual Session to complete against nearly 75 dental hygiene students from across the state.

The Water E. Terhune Art Gallery will showcase the Express Partners Faculty Art Show from Nov. 6-Dec. 12. The join exhibition will feature the artwork of Owens visual arts faculty as well as faculty from local college transfer partners.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 5-7 p.m.
Participating universities are: Bowling Green, Lourdes, Tiffin, Findlay and Toledo.

Chris Shutters has done 9 World Tours and has fronted bands like ‘Mountain’ (Mississippi Queen), ‘Music of Cream’ as well as his own band ‘Chris Shutters Band’. Not only is Shutters a 2-time National Blues Champion (2007, 2017) but he also was on the US Blues Charts ranked at #10 with his album ‘Good Gone Bad’ (2020). That album reached #1 in Australia and Quebec. He is now the guitarist and singer for Fleetwood Gold as well as the musical director of the band. They are ‘America’s # 1 Fleetwood Mac Experience’!
Chris is also currently the newest lead singer of the Grammy Award-Winning band Blood Sweat and Tears.

Toledo City Council Member, Sam Melden, grew up in the Toledo area and currently lives in West Toledo with his wife Lindsey and their three young daughters. He’s inspired by his daughters to do everything he can to build a community that will bring opportunities for the next generation to thrive.
Sam believes in hard work and servant leadership as two values to live by. Before he was elected to serve on Toledo City Council, Sam built his career in leadership roles with various non-profit organizations, including as the Executive Director of Food for Thought, Executive Director of the Servant Leadership Center, and Director of Growth and Advancement for Leadership Toledo, and the Director of Strategic Engagement for The Ability Center of Toledo.
Sam has never been shy about hard work and solving problems, and service to our community is in his DNA. He’s committed to safe, strong, and sustainable neighborhoods.
The Department of Creative Arts and Media will present the Denise Grupp-Verbon in her 25th annual harp recital on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts rotunda. Special guests include harpist Jennifer Meehan-Meier and guitarist Michael Grupp-Verbon.
The recital is part of Creative Noises Live, the fall concert series. Admission is free.
