Information Technology Services (ITS), in consultation with the Owens community, is publishing recommendations for computers that could be used to work remotely. These are general recommendations and do not take into account specific computing requirements of particular departments or roles.
Students should consult with their program’s department for recommendations for using specialized software on individually owned computers.
Computers featuring Microsoft Windows 10 and Apple macOS operating systems are listed. Computers featuring Linux or Chrome operating system have not been vetted and so are not included here.
General Use Computer (desktop or laptop) Minimum Requirements
Good for basic level computing, Internet Browsing, e-mail, MS Office and video conferencing.
Owens online bookstore has links to Technology Partner sites Dell and Lenovo.
Microsoft offers education discounts, as does Apple.
Install Microsoft Office on up to Five Personal Devices
Did you know that as an Owens Community College employee you can install Microsoft Office on up to 5 personal devices?

1. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL on the keyboard to bring up the login screen, if necessary.
2. Type in your username (firstname_lastname).
3. Type in your universal password.
4. Click on the arrow or hit enter on the keyboard to log in.
Please note - students will only be able to log into the campus computers if they are registered for the current semester.
*Please call the IT Help Desk (567)661-7120 if your password is not working or if you have forgotten your password. Help Desk will verify your information over the phone and reset your password so you can log in.
- Log into Omail+.
- Click on the Google Apps icon (square grid symbol) in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select Drive.
- Click New, top of the menu on the left.
- Click File upload.
- Browse and select the file you would like to upload.
- Click Open.
- Once the upload is complete, the file will show up in your Drive.
If you need to have your SAM password reset, submit a Password Reset Request.

- From your Omail+ screen, click on the Google Apps icon (square grid symbol) in the upper right-hand corner.
- Click Docs.
- Click Blank or one of the templates.
- Create your document.
- Click Untitled document, upper left corner.
- Type in what you would like to name your new document and hit Enter.
- Google Docs automatically Saves your changes.
- When the message All changes saved in Drive appears on the menu bar, it is safe to close out of your document.
- Your document will now appear in your Google Drive.
Academic systems are any computers used by faculty and students in an academic setting. All of the computers in the classrooms and computer labs are considered academic systems. Only students registered for classes will be able to log onto computers in the classrooms and labs.
Academic computers have student print solution software installed. This keeps track of each student's printing quota. Only students enrolled in the current semester can print from academic computers. If you would like more information on student printing, check out our student printing FAQs.
Note: Tiffin students taking classes on the Owens campus will be able to login/print as well.
**Please remember that if you suspect your computer is infected, take action immediately! Postponing action for any reason could result in a large loss of data.**
- Immediately unplug your network cable from either the back of the computer or the wall. You can verify that the network cable is unplugged by trying to view a website in your browser window. If the network cable is unplugged, you shouldn’t be able to get to any websites.
- Shut down your computer.
- Call the Help Desk (567)661-7120 for further instructions.
