After leading the Owens Community College women's basketball team to the state championship, Head Coach Bill Gomoluch has been named "Coach of the Year" for the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.
The Lady Express finished the season at 28-3, including a 17-game winning streak. They also went undefeated for the first four weeks of the season.
For the first time in the College's history, the women's team was nationally-ranked in the Top 10. The Lady Express were ranked as high as sixth in the nation among National Junior College Athletic Association Division II schools. The Lady Express also ranked third in the nation for its offense, scoring an average of 85.5 points per game.
Gomoluch said he was very honored to receive this award. "It's really a terrific way to end a terrific season," he said. "I think our success and this honor can be attributed to the fact that the assistant coaches and players believed in the system I've brought in."
Gomoluch debuted at Owens Community College this season, coming from Deerfield (MI) High School. During his eight seasons there, he compiled a 117-63 record after taking over a program that had six coaches in five years and a 30-game losing streak. He also produced five first-team "All-Staters" including former Lady Express player and Academic All-American, Ashli Barta.
Gomoluch played basketball at Harbor Beach High School and St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron and graduated from St. Clair with an associate's degree in social services.
