Rick Fox, an All-Ohio standout from St. Francis de Sales High School, has signed to play next season as a small forward for the Owens Community College men's basketball team.
"We are very excited that one of the best players in the city of Toledo has decided to play for us," Head Coach Jim Welling said. "Rick comes from an excellent program and he's very prepared to play coming right in as a freshman."
Fox, 6'7, was a major factor in the St. Francis Knights achieving the No. 1 ranking in the state early in their season, until a broken left foot forced him to miss seven games. He averaged 17.6 points and 8 rebounds per game before he was injured. Fox was voted Second Team All-City, First Team District 7, Second Team All-District and Honorable Mention for All-State Division 1.
Fox is the first new player signed by the Owens Express for the 1997-98 season. Welling said he expects to sign four to five more new players before September. Eight Express freshmen are returning.
The Owens Express were the state tournament champions for the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) for 1997. They ended this season with an overall record of 26-7 and 12-2 in the conference.
