Cynthia L. Jess of Rocky Ridge is the recipient of the 1997 Dr. Peggy A. Bensman Nursing Honor Award at Owens Community College. She was presented the award by Connie Hill, Owens nursing professor, at a recent Academic Recognition Brunch.
Jess also was the keynote speaker for Spring Commencement May 20 at Owens Community College.
Hill said Jess deserved the honor because of her "academic achievement, community and professional leadership and high professional standards." Besides maintaining a 4.0 grade point average as a registered nursing technology major, Jess also has participated in blood pressure and blood sugar screening programs, worked at Senior Citizens Day at the county fair and assisted the American Diabetic Association in public education through the mobile field unit.
For her senior practicum, she chose to practice in a psychiatric nursing setting and has worked with the counseling department at the College. She also has been a senior choir director and director of children's music at her church. Jess is a member of the Psi Beta and the Phi Theta Kappa honorary societies at Owens Community College.
The prestigious nursing award is named for Dr. Peggy A. Bensman, former Owens Vice President of Academic Affairs and first chair of the Owens School of Nursing.
