Fred Aubuchon, head coach of the women's volleyball team at Owens Community
College, has been named "Coach of the Year" for the National Junior College
Athletic League's Region 12 and District 7 and for the Ohio Community
College Athletic Conference (OCCAC).
"This is very surprising and I'm very honored that my fellow coaches would select me for such an honor," Aubuchon said. "I believe its a reflection of the talent of the women on this team and our accomplishments this year."
Last year, in his first season at Owens, Aubuchon was named "Coach of the Year" for the district and region -_"but to be named "Coach of the Year" for all three, including the conference, is really amazing," he said.
Aubuchon led his team to the NJCAA National Championships this fall for the second consecutive season where they finished in fifth place. The Lady Express earned a trip to nationals by defeating Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland in District 7 competition and defeating Columbus State in the Region 12 competition.
The Lady Express ended the season ranked No. 6 in the nation -_the only team in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia or Pennsylvania to be included in the Top 10.
Michael Rickard, Owens athletic coordinator, said the College is very proud of Aubuchon's achievements.
"Fred returned to the program this year, building on the successes of last season and recruiting some great student-athletes from the area," Rickard said. "Our team faced a number of tough opponents this year from large colleges, but Fred showed what a powerful team he had put together. I think Owens surprised a lot people."
Aubuchon, in his second year at Owens Community College, brought a great deal of coaching and playing experience from volleyball programs throughout Ohio and Michigan. He played men's club volleyball at Central Michigan University and the University of Toledo from 1991 to 1996. His collegiate coaching experience includes coaching women's club volleyball from 1993 to 1994 at CMU, plus he started and coached women's club volleyball at UT from 1994 to 1996.
This past summer, he coached a USA Volleyball Juniors program in the Toledo area.
A native of Richland, Michigan, Aubuchon earned a bachelor's degree in community recreation from Central Michigan University in 1994. He also earned a master's degree in recreation administration from the University of Toledo.
