Owens Community College has been selected over dozens of other colleges
across the United States to host the NJCAA Division 3 Women's Volleyball
National Championships this fall.
"We are quite pleased to be selected," said Michael Rickard, Owens Express athletics coordinator. "We have the commitment of the entire College behind this event and I know it will be a rewarding experience for all the student-athletes involved."
The top eight teams from the eight national districts in Division 3 will come to the Owens Toledo-area Campus to play in the national championships. The event begins with a banquet on Thursday, November 12 and continues with tournament play on Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14.
Owens will host the nationals for three consecutive years through the awarding of this contract, Rickard said. The championship tournaments will be held in Alumni Hall this fall, and then should be held in 1999 and 2000 in the College's proposed $7.5 million Student Health and Activities Center.
Under Head Coach Fred Aubuchon, the Lady Express volleyball team has traveled to nationals for the past two years at the College of DuPage, Chicago, taking fifth place both years.
"I'm very excited about this upcoming season and I'm glad Owens has been recognized for the contributions we can make to the NJCAA's national volleyball program," Aubuchon said.
This is the first national championship tournament that Owens Community College has hosted in any sport. Owens also is the first college in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) to ever host the nationals.
