Owens Student-Athletes Honored at Awards Banquet

  A number of Owens Community College student-athletes were honored Friday evening at the College's annual Athletics Banquet.

  "We are very proud of all our Owens Express student-athletes who have worked hard this year in the classrooms and on the courts and fields," said Michael Rickard, Coordinator of Athletics/Activities for Owens. "Their dedication and commitment is displayed in another year of successful seasons."

  Rickard announced that Elizabeth Harris, a sophomore women's basketball player, was named to the NJCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-American Team. Harris, a Central Catholic High School graduate, is the first All-American recipient ever for the Owens women's basketball program. She recently signed a letter of intent to play for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team.

  Other awards presented during the banquet included the following:

  Women's volleyball -

  • Lori Wolf, a Swanton High School graduate, and Abby Thompson, a North Baltimore graduate, were named Co-MVPs of the Year;
  • Mackenzie Lehman, an Anthony Wayne High School graduate, and Abby Thompson, were named Co-Offensive Players of the Year;
  • Jaime Walton, an Edon High School graduate, was named Most Improved Player of the Year;
  • Tammy Murphy, a Woodward High School graduate, received the Coach's Award.
  • Top scholar-athlete - Jeanette Lewicz, 3.13 grade point average, a Whitmer High School graduate.

  Men's basketball -

  • Craig Erquhart, a Lathrup High School (Southfield, MI) graduate, was named MVP of the Year;
  • Pete Paule, a Perrysburg High School graduate, received the Coach's Award;
  • Shaun Fountain, a Beechcroft High School (Columbus, OH) graduate, was named Most Improved Player of the Year;
  • Top scholar-athlete - Pete Paule 3.79 GPA, a Perrysburg High School graduate.

  Women's basketball -

  • Holly Volmar, a Cardinal Stritch High School graduate, received the Coach's Award;
  • Amy Amstutz, a Pandora-Gilboa High School graduate, was named the Most Improved Player of the Year;
  • Elizabeth Harris, a Central Catholic High School graduate, was named Best Defensive Player of the Year:
  • Top scholar-athlete - Tammy Murphy, 3.80 GPA, a Woodward High School graduate.

  Men's baseball -Top scholar-athlete - Michael Music, a Woodmore High School graduate, 4.0 GPA.
  Additional awards will be presented after the season ends, May 22.

  Cheerleading - Top scholar-athlete - Beth Henderson, a Central Catholic High School graduate, 3.0 GPA.
