The Owens Community College women's volleyball team won the Ohio Community
College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) state championship this weekend for the first time in Owens history.
The Lady Express, led by Head Coach Fred Aubuchon, defeated Sinclair CC 15-12 and 15-9, defeated Clark State CC 6-15, 15-8 and 15-6, and defeated Lakeland CC 15-10 and 15-10. In the finals, they again defeated Lakeland 15-6, 15-6 and 15-10.
"Our players have put a tremendous amount of energy and dedication into this season and we are so excited to see it paying off now," Aubuchon said.
The Lady Express currently are ranked No. 2 in the nation by the NJCAA and have an overall record of 28-10 and conference record of 12-2.
Abby Thompson, a North Baltimore High School graduate, was named OCCAC "Player of the Year", as well as All-Conference and All-Tournament. Jaime Walton, an Edon High School graduate, also was named All-Conference and All-Tournament.
The Lady Express volleyball team has traveled to nationals for the past two years, twice taking fifth place. Next Friday-Saturday, November 13-14, Owens Community College will host the NJCAA Division 3 Women's Volleyball National Championships.
The top eight teams from the eight national districts in Division 3 will be decided through District and Regional competition throughout this week. In the Region 12 playoffs, the Lady Express play Columbus State CC at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home. The winner of that match-up advances to the District 7 championship at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 7 to face Howard CC of Columbia, Maryland.
Owens was selected over dozens of other colleges across the United States to host the nationals this fall. This is the first national championship tournament Owens has hosted in any sport. Owens also is the first college in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference to ever host the volleyball nationals.
