Area Student-Athletes Sign to Play Men's Baseball at Owens

   Owens Community College is proud to sign 14 local men to the Owens Express 1999 men's intercollegiate baseball team.

   Rich Pivoriunas returns for his second year as head coach. He formerly coached baseball at Eastwood and Pike-Delta-York high schools for 23 years. This is his first recruiting class at Owens.

   "We are very excited about the way this team is shaping up," Pivoriunas said. "We are fielding some great talent and we're looking forward to making an impact in the conference this year."

   Those named to the Owens Express baseball team are:

  • Wesley Baker, of Toledo, a 1998 Maumee High School graduate, where he was All-League for two years, MVP as a junior and team captain as a senior. He is the son of Terry and Judy Baker.
  • Ryan Clark, of North Baltimore, a 1998 North Baltimore High School graduate, where he was team captain and a left-handed pitcher. He was All-League for three years and All-Wood County for two years. He is the son of Raymond and Joni Clark.
  • Don Cornell, of London, Ontario, Canada, a 1998 graduate of Laurier Secondary School, where he was a two-year All-Star team member, played in the CABA World Series and also was named MVP in football, as a running back. He is the son of Ken and Sherry Cornell.
  • Jeremy Dirkmaat, of Temperance, Michigan, a 1998 Bedford High School graduate, where he was a pitcher and played third base and was All-GLL, All-County and All-District. He was named to the Monroe County All-Star Team and the GLL All-Star Team. He is the son of Bill and Linda Dirkmaat.
  • Justin Elinger, of Toledo, a 1998 Whitmer High School graduate, where he was a pitcher and played third base and was First Team All-GLL and First Team All-District. He is the son of Paul and Christine Elinger.
  • Aaron Franke, of Oregon, a 1997 Clay High School graduate, is a returning catcher and pitcher for the Owens Express. As a senior, he was a member of the All-Ohio baseball team.
  • Jeffrey Hess, of Oregon, a 1998 Clay High School graduate, where he was All-GLL, Second Team All-District, team MVP and had the highest batting average for the team. He is the son of Robert and Judith Hess.
  • Cody Lance, of Brimfield, Ohio, a 1998 Field High School graduate, where he was a pitcher and All-League for two years. He is the son of Tom and Fay Lance.
  • Doug Miller, of Gibsonburg, a 1998 Gibsonburg High School graduate, where he was First Team All-League as a junior, and First Team All-District and Second Team All-League as a senior. He is the son of Don and Judy Miller.
  • Justin Mullins, of Toledo, a 1997 Central Catholic High School graduate, is a returning outfielder for the Owens Express.
  • Michael Music, of Woodville, a 1997 Woodmore High School graduate. He is a returning pitcher and first baseman for the Owens Express. Last season, Music was named All-OCCAC, All-Region and to the Owens Community College Academic Honors List.
  • John O'Brien, of Weston, a 1998 Otsego High School graduate, where he was catcher and First Team All-SLL for three years, First Team All-District for three years and First Team All-Wood County for three years. He also played running back in football and was First Team for two years, Honorable Mention All-State Division 3, and All-Wood County for three years. He is the son of Chuck and Nila O'Brien.
  • Stacy Tresize, of Sylvania, a 1998 Northview High School graduate, where he was a pitcher/outfielder and team captain and named First Team NLL, First Team All-District, Honorable Mention All-State, Team Ohio and team captain. He is the son of Tom and Sue Tresize.
