Owens Findlay Campus Offers New Welding Program

FINDLAY - Another opportunity for a "hot" career now is available at Owens Community College with the addition of a Welding program for the Findlay Campus.

"We are excited to offer welding education and training for individuals looking for a new career - or for area businesses who need their employees' skills to be upgraded," said Glenn Rettig, Chair of Industrial and Engineering Technologies on the Owens Findlay Campus.

"For 15 years, Owens Community College has been dedicated to serving the needs of business and industry in the Findlay/Hancock County area and we believe the Welding program is a natural expansion of our services," he said.

The state-of-the-art facilities at the College feature a 12-station welding lab equipped with oxy/acetylene, MIG, stick and TIG welding equipment. Students can earn an Associate Degree in Manufacturing Technologies with a Welding Major or earn a Welding Certificate. Students also may enroll in individual welding classes even if they are not seeking a degree or certificate.

The program also trains students to become well-rounded employees with classes in communication, supervision, psychology and computers. They also have the opportunity to become state certified in welding.

This spring, Owens welding classes will be offered on a 10-week schedule starting the first week of March. Traditional 16-week welding classes begin in August.

Rettig said area businesses and industries have indicated to the College their need for a high quality welding program for their employees. Welding positions are found in business areas such as maintenance, fabrication, tool and die, construction, manufacturing, mold shops, factories and the rail car industry.

The welding field has been traditionally male, but Rettig said there is no reason women can't excel in the industry. "With the local growing economy, business is booming and there is a demand for knowledgable, experienced welders."
