Owens Student-Athletes Honored at Awards Banquet

  Dozens of Owens Community College student-athletes were honored Wednesday evening at the College's annual Athletics Banquet.

  "We are very proud of all our Owens Express student-athletes who have worked hard this year in the classrooms and on the courts and fields," said Michael Rickard, Coordinator of Athletics/Activities for Owens. "Their dedication and commitment is displayed in another year of successful seasons."

  Rickard announced that sophomores Amy Amstutz and Jon Powell, both were named NJCAA First Team All-Americans -_ the first time in Owens history that two players in one season have received this prestigious award.

  Other awards presented during the banquet included the following:

Women's volleyball -_

  • Abby Thompson, a North Baltimore High School graduate, and Jaime Walton, an Edon High School graduate, were named Co-MVPs of the Year;
  • Stacey Judy, a Northwood High School graduate, was named Most Improved Player of the Year and received the Coach's Award;
  • Top scholar-athlete - Emily Ault, 4.0 grade point average, a Bowling Green High School graduate.
Men's basketball -
  • Jon Powell, a Catholic Central High School (Springfield, OH) graduate, was named MVP of the Year;
  • Pete Maienknecht, a Bowling Green High School graduate, received the Coach's Award;
  • Eric Floyd, a St. John's Jesuit High School graduate, received the "Mr. Defense" of the Year award;
  • Top scholar-athlete - Pete Maienknecht, 4.0 GPA.
Women's basketball -
  • Amy Amstutz, a Pandora-Gilboa High School graduate, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Year;
  • Stephanie Galant, a Lake High School graduate, and Kyle Gibson, a Whitmer High School graduate were named the Most Improved Players of the Year;
  • Becky Snyder, an Eastwood High School graduate, received the Coach's Award;
  • Stephanie Walters, an Eastwood High School graduate, was named Best Defensive Player of the Year:
  • Top scholar-athlete - Jolene Brooks, 3.70 GPA, an Otsego High School graduate.
Men's soccer -_
  • Tom Hudecek, an Anthony Wayne High School graduate, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Year and Best Offensive Player of the Year;
  • Kent Hertzfeld, an Anthony Wayne High School graduate, was named Best Defensive Player of the Year:
  • Tony Moore, a Rossford High School graduate, was named the Most Improved Player of the Year;
  • Mutaz Awad, an international student, received the Express Soccer Attitude Award;
  • Top scholar-athlete - Rich Kokensparger, 4.0 GPA, a Woodward High School graduate.
Cheerleading -
  • Top scholar-athlete - Angie Iott, 4.0 GPA. a Whitmer High School graduate. Men's baseball -_
    • Top scholar-athlete - Michael Music, 3.50 GPA, a Woodmore High School graduate. Additional awards will be presented after the season ends May 22.
    Women's softball -_
    • Top scholar-athlete - Crystal Shank, 4.0 GPA, a Bowling Green High School graduate. Additional awards will be presented after the season ends May 22.
