Owens Community College student-athletes and coaches - along with the College's Board of Trustees, President Daniel H. Brown, other college administrators and faculty members - joined together Wednesday to
celebrate the groundbreaking for a new $8.36 million Student Health and
"This new Student Health and Activities Center creates many exciting opportunities for Owens students and student-athletes in health, fitness and athletics," President Brown said. "We are pleased to offer this addition to campus life here at the College."
The 86,200-square-foot facility will be located next to the Library, Math/Science Center and Audio/Visual Classroom Center on the east side of Oregon Road. Home to Express athletic teams, the facility will allow students to participate in intramural sports and personal fitness, aerobics, weightlifting and table games in the recreation area.
Its unique feature is two gymnasiums separated by a moveable wall. The student gym features volleyball courts and a running track. The performance gym features a basketball court and stage for academic, cultural and athletic events with seating for up to 4,000. The facility also includes a food court, men's and women's locker rooms, a bookstore/gift shop area and offices for student activities personnel. The back of the facility will open onto the baseball/softball complex on Biniker Drive.
Designed by architects The Collaborative, of Toledo, the Owens Student Health and Activities Center brings together some of the best aspects from athletic facilities at the University of Notre Dame, Ohio University and Adrian College.
Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2000.
