Owens Softball Players Honored by Conference & Region

In their first year of intercollegiate play, the Owens Community College women's softball team has been honored by the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and the NJCAA Great Lakes Region 12.

Two players were named to the Region 12 All-Tournament Team: Tanya Tennyson (Milan, MI High School), and Jamie Spino (Woodward High School).

Crystal Shank (Bowling Green High School) was named First Team All-Region 12 and Honorable Mention OCCAC. Megan Dukes (North Baltimore High School) was named Honorable Mention All-Region 12 and Honorable Mention OCCAC. Dukes also was nationally ranked as high as No. 5 for strike out leaders among the NJCAA's Division III teams during the season.

Three other players also were named as Honorable Mention OCCAC: Melinda Kistner (Otsego High School), Nikki Isbell (Lake High School) and Tennyson.

The Lady Express, led by Head Coach Mickey Arquette of Perrysburg, placed third in the conference this season with an overall record of 17-24.

Team awards presented by Arquette included: Crystal Shank - MVP and Offensive Player of the Year; Tanya Tennyson and Megan Dukes - Coach's Award; Angelina Caligiuri (Notre Dame Academy, Northwood) - "Good Kid" Award; Chrissy Soto (Otsego High School) - Most Improved Player of the Year; and Jamie Spino - Defensive Player of the Year.

Arquette said she was very proud of the Lady Express' effort in their first season.

"Going up against some tough teams, like Lakeland Community College, Macomb Community College and Delta College can be intimidating, especially in the first year for a team," Arquette said. "But we saw a lot of hard work and determination from our players on the field this spring."
