Owens Associate English Professor Named OAACE "Contributor of the Year"

  For her state-of-the-art solutions to problems of illiteracy and adult education, Deb Richey, Associate Professor of English at Owens Community College, has been named the Northwest Ohio "Contributor of the Year" for the Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education (OAACE).

  Richey was honored for her volunteer work with the Northwest Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) Resource Center at the College and for helping the "GED on TV" program.

  She developed a website for "GED on TV" students and the general public, to search for information concerning the GED and the program's lessons, as well as other useful links on the Internet. The address for the website is

  "Deb's contributions to adult basic and literacy education have helped many people this year and we're very grateful for what she's given to our programs," said Diane Ninke, Coordinator of the Northwest ABLE Resource Center.

  In addition, she has created a message board for student questions. All questions receive a response within 24 hours, and Richey has volunteered colleagues to assist her with some of the content area questions.

  Richey received her award at the annual OAACE Conference in Columbus.
