Michael Rickard, Athletics Coordinator at Owens Community College, has been named the new Commissioner of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC).
"This should be an exciting year for the conference as community colleges in Ohio continue to grow, enrolling more students and adding new sports," Rickard said. "I'm looking forward to assisting the development and enrichment of these athletic teams."
As commissioner for the next two years, Rickard will manage day-to-day business of the conference, which includes nine colleges competing in seven sports. Among his primary duties will be investigating the addition of new sports and a new college to the OCCAC this year. He also will determine who will host the state championships for each sport and oversee all the athletic and academic awards of the conference.
Rickard has served the Owens athletics programs for 16 years. He is a 1982 Owens graduate with an associate degree in sports recreation and a 1984 University of Toledo graduate with a bachelor's degree in education and recreation/sports management. He is working on a master's degree in sports administration at Bowling Green State University.
Rickard was named "Athletic Director of the Year" for 1995-96 by the OCCAC. For the past four years, he served as the OCCAC men's basketball chair and this fall begins a two-year term as the OCCAC softball chair. He is a member of the National Intramural, Recreation and Sports Association, as well as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
He has been associated with Owens athletics teams since the 1979-80 season, serving as a scorekeeper, statistician and assistant coach under three men's basketball coaches.
