Increasing access for Toledo-area residents to higher education, Owens Community College has contracted with TARTA to provide bus service from Downtown Toledo to the College.
"Owens Community College is committed to continuing to expand our services, which allows more area residents to take advantage of a college education," Owens President Daniel H. Brown said.
The TARTA service between the campus on Oregon Road and Downtown will be offered weekdays, starting Monday, August 23 for the Fall Semester, and operating when Owens classes are in session. There will be 10 daily runs Monday through Thursday and seven runs on Friday.
"For area residents in the TARTA bus service district, we believe this is a tremendous asset and supports Owens' mission of providing increased access to an affordable college education," President Brown said.
The 28-passenger, handicapped-accessible bus also will stop at five campus buildings: College Hall, the Library, Engineering Technologies, Law Enforcement/Fire Science Center and Center for Development & Training.
"We at TARTA are excited about this new cooperative venture with Owens Community College which we hope will help make Owens more accessible for Toledo residents," said Dick Ruddell, General Manager of TARTA.
The Downtown stop will be at the corner of Huron and Jackson streets, conveniently located across from One Government Center and nearby a stop on TARTA's bus loop.
Riders will only have to show an Owens ID to use the bus service. Guest passes also will be available from the College for visitors.
The College has offered a shuttle service between Downtown and campus for more than 20 years. Ridership on the Owens shuttle bus has increased steadily during the past three years, with 50-60 riders using the service daily.
