Owens Celebrates "Literacy Day"

A number of community leaders joined Owens Community College in a recent celebration of "Literacy Day" with a day full of events at the College focused on reading and children.

Throughout the day, there were readings to children in the College's Child Care Center and a group of children from All Saints School, Rossford.

Among the readers to children's groups were: Magistrate Judith A. Fornof of the Family Court in Toledo, Deputy Chief Robert Metzger of the Toledo Fire Department, children's book authors Marian Goldner and Denise Flemming, and Dave Hecht, anchor and reporter for WNWO TV 24 News. More than a dozen Owens faculty, staff and administrators also read to the children.

The workshops "Children's Book Creating Sessions" and "Learning to Read to Children," also were held during Literacy Day.

Dr. David Miller, Professor of Arts & Sciences, coordinated the event that was held in conjunction with the "Ohio Reads" program promoted by Governor Bob Taft.
