Owens Hosts NJCAA Baseball District Championships

The Owens Community College men's baseball team will attempt this weekend to return to the NJCAA Division III World Series for the third time in Owens history.

The Owens Express (28-19 overall) host Joliet Junior College (29-30) in a best-of-three series for the District B championship. All games will be played at the Owens baseball complex on the Toledo-area Campus on Biniker Drive.

The district winner qualifies for the NJCAA Division III World Series at Batavia, N.Y. May 20-26.

The two teams play a doubleheader at noon Saturday, May 13. A third and deciding game, if necessary, is at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 14.

The Express advanced to the NJCAA Division III World Series in 1995 and 1996, placing fifth both times. This season, led by Head Coach Rich Pivoriunas, the Owens Express won the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference title for the first time and captured its fourth Region XII championship.

The Joliet Junior College Wolves won the 1994 World Series championship, finished second in 1995 and placed third in 1997. They won their fifth Region IV championship in seven seasons last weekend.
