Owens Hosts NJCAA Women's Volleyball Nationals November 10-11

Owens Community College will again host the NJCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship this fall, welcoming the top eight Division 3 teams from across the country.

"We are honored to host this championship and invite the community to see student-athletes from throughout the United States in Toledo for some tough competition," said Michael Rickard, Owens Express Athletics Director.

The championship will take place in Owens' new $9.3 million Student Health and Activities Center, which just opened this fall.

The 86,400-square-foot Student Health and Activities Center is twice as big as the College's former facility, Alumni Hall, and has a maximum seating capacity of 4,500. It features a performance gym with a stage, a student intramural gym, a three-lane running track, tennis courts, 10 locker rooms and numerous weight, fitness, aerobic and game rooms. The back of the facility opens onto the baseball/softball complex on Biniker Drive.

Designed by architects The Collaborative, of Toledo, the Owens Student Health and Activities Center brings together some of the best aspects from athletic facilities at the University of Notre Dame, Ohio University and Adrian College.

"We are excited to showcase our new facility for this national event and we encourage everyone to come out and see the building, as well as some exciting volleyball," Rickard said.

Led by Head Coach Fred Aubuchon, the Lady Express volleyball team has placed third at nationals for the past two years. The Lady Express volleyball team currently is ranked No. 1 in the nation by the NJCAA and is undefeated in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference. Their overall record is 35-3 and their conference record is 13-0.

  The National Championship pool play matches begin Friday, November 10 at 11 a.m., continuing at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, November 11 matches will continue at 11 a.m., with the consolation match at 1:30 p.m. and the championship at 4 p.m.

Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. A two-day pass is $6. Admission is free with an Owens student ID. The top eight teams from the eight national districts of Division 3 will come to the Owens Toledo-area Campus to play in the National Championships.
