Students interested in a career as a medical coding specialist, in the health care field can now pursue such an opportunity through the new Medical Coding Certificate program offered at Owens Community College.
Medical coding specialists review and analyze health records to identify relevant diagnoses and procedures for distinct patient encounters. They are responsible for translating diagnostic and procedural phrases utilized by health care providers into coded form. The information is used in the assessment of clinical care, to support medical research activity and to support the identification of health care concerns critical to the public.
After completing the Owens certification program, medical coding specialists are required to take an examination, which is offered by the American Health Information Management Association to become a certified coding specialist.
Individuals skilled in health information coding are employed as coders for hospitals, physician offices, peer review organizations, clinics, consulting firms and insurance companies.
The program requires a total of 28 credit hours with classes such as medical terminology, inpatient coding, anatomy and physiology, as well as pathophysiology, introduction to health information and ambulatory coding. The cost is only $75 per credit hour.
To register for the Medical Coding Certificate program, or for more information, call (567) 661-7286 or 1-800-GO-OWENS, Ext. 7286.
