Owens Athletic Director Recognized by Rotary Club for Community Contributions

Your Success Starts Here Michael Rickard, Athletic Director of Owens Community College, has been honored by the Rotary Club of Maumee to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship for his contributions in the Toledo community.

The Paul Harris Fellowship honors individuals who show extraordinary efforts regarding humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

"The Paul Harris Fellowship award is given very sparingly," said Greg Fish, past president of the Rotary Club of Maumee. "Our Rotary nominated Michael for his contributions to the founding of the boys and girls high school basketball Holiday Tournaments at Owens Community College. With his help, more than $14,000 is raised during this annual event, which benefits high schools and scholar-athletes."

Established in 1998, the two tournaments each consist of four teams from Northwest Ohio, which plays between the Christmas and New Year's holidays. During the tournament, each school selects a scholar-athlete from its participating team who then is awarded a $500 scholarship by the Holiday Tournament basketball committee.

Founded by Paul Harris, Rotary International is an organization of businesses and professional leaders from more than 160 countries worldwide. Approximately 1.2 million individuals are members at over 29,000 Rotary clubs.

Rickard has served the Owens athletics programs for 18 years. He is a 1982 Owens graduate with an associate degree in sports recreation and a 1984 University of Toledo graduate with a bachelor's degree in education and recreation/sports management. He is working on a master's degree in sports administration.

From 1999-2001, Rickard served as the OCCAC Commissioner. As commissioner, Rickard managed day-to-day business of the conference, which includes nine community colleges competing in seven sports.

Rickard also was named OCCAC Athletic Director of the Year for 1995-96 and 1999-2000. He is a member of the National Intramural, Recreation and Sports Association, as well as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
