Owens Community College Hosts First-Ever Homecoming, Saturday, October 6

Your Success Starts Here Owens Community College students, alumni and their families are invited to attend a day-long celebration as the College hosts "Homecoming 2001: Fun, Festivities and Friendships" on Saturday, October 6.

"Homecoming is one of the most traditional events occurring on college campuses nationwide," said Dermot Forde, Owens Student Activities Coordinator. "We're inviting alumni to return to their alma mater to see the dynamic changes that have occurred, increasing educational opportunities for current and future Owens students. This event also will allow alumni to gather with friends to relive past memories when they were students at Owens."

Homecoming festivities will kick off with the fifth annual Owens Express Classic Golf Scramble at 8 a.m. at the Whiteford Valley Golf Club in Ottawa Lake, Michigan. All proceeds from the golf scramble will provide scholarship assistance to students who work in support of athletic programs under the athletic director's guidance.

In addition to the golf outing, three Owens athletic teams will be competing throughout the day. The Express baseball team will face Lorain County Community College at 1 p.m. Beginning at 2 p.m., the women's volleyball team will take on Columbus State Community College, while men's soccer will play host to Southern State Community College.

The new Student Health and Activities Center will serve as the venue for a number of fun Homecoming activities. From 4-6 p.m. Owens students, alumni and their families will have the opportunity to receive a free caricature drawn of themselves by Jodie Fleming, named the "World's Fastest Caricature Artist" at the 1998 National Caricaturist Network Convention.

Additional activities at the SHAC include music by guitarist Greg Aranda, karaoke and face painting for children, as well as a number of raffles. Individuals also can register for prize drawings and receive free giveaways at the Owens Alumni table. Food will be served from 4-6 p.m.

Evening activities will feature the Top 40 cover band "Good Stuff Maynard" from 6-9 p.m. at the SHAC.
