Saturday, December 15, Ralph Nader will bring his "People Have the Power Tour" to Toledo's Stranahan Great Hall to support protection of American jobs & local businesses, strengthening public education, environmental protection, living wages, worker safety, and health care reform.
The event is being co-sponsored by Owens Community College.
"The purpose of these events this year is to bring people together in cities across America, which is especially critical now," said Nader, the 2000 Green Party Presidential Candidate. "Progressive Toledoans must work together. Civil liberties of all Americans are at risk in Congress and the Executive Branch. While we mourn the victims of the recent terrible tragedies, we will honor their memory by working together to advance the values of democracy, law enforcement, respect for human rights, and the protection of all innocent people prevail here both at home and around the world. The event will also focus attention on ending corporate welfare and universal health care."
Special guest performers and local speakers working for progressive social change will be joining Nader during the event.
Toledo is the last stop for the 2001 season of this nationwide tour, which began this summer in Phoenix, AZ and then continued to Portland, OR on Aug. 4, 2001 where over 7,500 people attended the rally. Nader likened this current tour to the "Super Rallies" he headlined during his bid for the Presidency in 2000. Those rallies filled nine major arenas from Oakland's Kaiser Area to Boston's Fleet center with turnouts that greatly surpassed those generated by the major candidates. This event is being sponsored by Nader's newest organization, Democracy Rising, which seeks to unify people "in the cause of freeing American politics from the grip of corporate interests," he said. Nader has visited Toledo numerous times over the years and has always fought for the people there. His visit here will help to ensure that political and corporate corruption does not overpower the rights of Toledo's citizens.
The rally at the Stranahan Great Hall begins at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:00 p.m.), Dec 15. Numerous Toledo civic organizations will have information tables at the Stranahan Great Hall, distributing literature and soliciting signatures for a variety of progressive causes.
