Nurse Assistant Training Offered at Owens Workforce and Community Services Division

A new career in the health care field can start with a three-week class in certified nurse assistant training at Owens Community College.

The Nurse Assistant Program is offered through Owens Community College's Workforce and Community Services Division, 2249 Tracy Road, Northwood, which is the largest training provider for nurse assistants in Northwest Ohio.

The course meets at the Toledo-area Campus from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 7-25. The program repeats at the same times, July 29 - August 15, August 19 - September 6 and September 9-26. Evening classes are 3-10 p.m. Monday through Friday, September 9-26.

Nurse assistants care for a variety of patients, including the mentally retarded, the elderly, cancer patients and children. They are one-on-one caregivers and often work in hospitals, nursing homes, home health care agencies and hospices.

Nurse assistants are required by the Ohio Department of Health to be professionally trained and registered. The Nurse Assistant Training Program offered by the Workforce and Community Services Division is state-approved and prepares the nurse assistant to take the state exam.

Basic nursing skills, personal care skills, mental health and social service needs, safety and emergency procedures, infection control and respecting and promoting patients' rights are covered. Two eight-hour clinical days also are included in the course.

Enrollment in the Nurse Assistant Program is open to the public and formal admission to the College is not required.

To register for the training classes, or for more information, call (567) 661-7357 or 1-800-GO-OWENS, Ext. 7357.
