"Care Fair for Health" Wednesday, October 9 at Owens Community College

Owens Community College offers area residents the opportunity to learn about ways to make their lives healthier as the College hosts "Care Fair for Health 2002" on Wednesday, October 9.

The Care Fair is sponsored by the Owens Health Technologies Division's faculty and students and is held from 1-4 p.m. in the College's Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) on the Toledo-area Campus. Owens is located on Oregon Road, four miles from Downtown Toledo. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

"Care Fair for Health is a great opportunity for individuals of any age to take advantage of the health services and advice being offered by Northwest Ohio's premiere health care community," said Lee Grinonneau, Owens Care Fair for Health Committee Chairman.

Attendees can pick up vital information from nearly 50 health displays on many topics, including cancer detection and prevention, CPR, organ and tissue donation and health appraisals.

As the cold and flu season approaches, individuals are urged to get their flu and pneumonia vaccines, which will be offered through the Visiting Nurse Service. The flu vaccines are only $17, while individuals can receive pneumonia vaccines for $25. The Visiting Nurse Service will accept Medicare and Paramount Elite insurances to pay for the vaccines. All other health information and demonstrations are offered free of charge.

Among the organizations on hand from the health care community will include Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Area Office on Aging, Mobile Meals of Toledo and the Medical College of Ohio/Mercy. In addition, blood sugar screenings and diabetes education information will be provided by the St. Charles/Mercy Mobile Health Van, while St. Luke's Hospital will be offering tobacco education and smoking cessation program information. Individuals also can view Promedica Health System's helicopter air unit, which will be on display during the event.

The College's Student Nurse Association will be holding a healthy bake sale and provide free recipes. Owens nursing students also will offer information on the Heimlich maneuver and CPR through a "Choking Charlie" demonstration.
